Creating an Action Plan
Yesterday we set SMART goals, wrote them down, and placed them some place where we can see them often. Although setting goals is a great first step, many fail at taking the next step and that is to plan a course of action toward achieving those goals.
If many of you participated in the LIVE webinar, you learned the 5 Key Principles to Transforming Your Health & Wellness. If you missed the presentation or would like a review of the content, you can read the article here.
To plan a course of action we will be using three key principles...
1. Plan WHAT it is that you are going to do to achieve your goal.
If your fitness goal is to be consistent with your fitness videos 3x/week for the next 30-Days, then your WHAT is the fitness videos. Although that might sound easy to do during this challenge since we are sending you the feature video every 2nd day, it might not fit your personal schedule. If your busiest work day lands on Day 5 of the challenge, and you know that getting a workout in will be difficult, then plan to recover on Day 5. Make sure you plan to follow the video we sent on Day 5 on Day 7 instead.
If your nutrition goal is to include at least one or more vegetable item(s) to at least one meal a day for the next 30 days, then you will need to plan WHAT vegetable will go in which meal(s).
2. Plan WHEN those action steps are to take place.
This is where a calendar comes in handy. Take the WHAT and place it on a calendar. Again, be specific. Just having the day that you need to take action doesn't always work. There are 24 hours in each day. If we fail to choose which hour to take action what often ends up happening is taking no action at all. Remember, if it's not in your schedule it doesn't exist.
Once you've placed the action step into your schedule, make sure you keep that appointment like it was an appointment to see your doctor. Just think every time you miss an action step, you pay in a way that it brings you further from your goals. But, every action step you DO take brings you closer.
3. Plan HOW each action step is going to happen.
Now, if we take the first fitness goal example then the HOW is easy. Simply start the video and follow along. But every 2nd day you are responsible to plan your cardiovascular activity yourself. If you are choosing to walk, are you using a treadmill, walking in the mall, or walking outside? Are you timing yourself or going for a specific distance? Plan out these details ahead of time so that you'll have to do minimal thinking when it's time to do them. Remember, we tend to follow the path of least resistance, so carve that path ahead of time.
Once you start your planning you might notice the details of your SMART goal might change a little. That is totally okay. It simply means you are making the goals SMARTer.
The one important thing is to not get discouraged when an action step is missed. Remember, tomorrow is a new day; pick up where you left off and keep moving forward.
