Here is another lie that we have all heard from the diet industry: Eat Less Fat to Lose Weight.
Here is the issue: if we are deficient in essential fatty acids, then our body goes into fat storage mode. In fact, when given the right kind and amount of fat, it helps curve cravings and activate fat burning hormones.
One of the strategies I use to help my clients increase the right kind of fat is through homemade yogurt parfaits.
Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT use commercially marketed flavoured yogurt. The grocery stores are filled with them and most of them either contain more sugar than ice cream, or artificial sweeteners that your body has no idea what to do with.
I use plain, FULL fat yogurt (11% is the highest I have seen). Add your own berries, nuts, and seeds, and turn your yogurt into a crunchy delicious parfait.
For this recipe, I used pomegranate seeds to increase Vitamin C and antioxidants, raw pumpkin seeds to increase magnesium and zinc, and chia seeds to increase fibre, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids.
These ingredients go together nicely and make a beautiful green and red Christmassy- coloured treat.
Christmas Yogurt Parfait
- 0.5 (half) cup plain full fat yogurt
- 0.25(quarter) cup blueberries (fresh or frozen) *
- 0.24 (quarter) cup pomegranate seeds
- 1 tsp chia seeds
- 1 Tbsp raw pumpkin seeds
* Frozen blueberries are great to use because they make juicy syrup when defrosted and mixed really well with the yogurt.
One method I like to use is in the morning, place frozen blueberries and yogurt in a container. Placing the container in your lunch bag & by lunchtime the blueberries will be defrosted. Just place the rest of the ingredients in a separate container as toppings and add them when you are ready to eat.
If you are making this recipe because you need something now, I recommend the fresh blueberry method.
1. Place all ingredients in a bowl. Enjoy!
